Teachers on the Estuary (TOTE)

TOTE is a teacher training program that brings coastal research into the classroom.

The next TOTE training will take place from May 16th to May 17th, 2026. 

Location: Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve & Border Field State Park

Accommodations: Tent Camping at Silver Strand State Beach

Timing: While programming begins at 9a.m. on Saturday, May 16, camping will be available starting at 5p.m. on Friday, May 15. The Institute will end at 12p.m. on Sunday, May 17.

Food: Meals and snacks included

This 1-night, 2-day professional development will create an immersive learning experience for bilingual educators, scientists, and storytellers as part of the Teachers on the Estuary (TOTE) training program, offering:

  • An opportunity to experience science at the Tijuana River NERR and learn how you can integrate it into your work
  • Emphasis on bilingual education, resources, and trinational environmental collaboration between the United States, Mexico, and the Kumeyaay Nation
  • Skill-building sessions with California State Park Staff and National Geographic Explorers
  • Time to co-create lessons and resources inspired by the wonders of CA State Parks and the collective expertise of participants
