 This summer, visitors and their four-legged companions will have a new way to support wildlife at the beach. U.S. Fish & Wildlife, San Diego Bird Alliance, and the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve are launching a BARK Rangers program at the beach and dune habitat at the south end of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach. The program encourages responsible recreation through a simple pledge: Bag your pet’s waste, Always leash your pet, Respect wildlife, and Know where you can go. Dogs and their caretakers who take the pledge will be sworn in as BARK Rangers and receive a commemorative bandana.
The coastal dunes of southern Imperial Beach provide critical habitat for the California Least Tern and Western Snowy Plover, two federally protected beach-nesting birds. These species nest directly on the sand and are especially vulnerable to disturbance during the breeding season. The area is also an important stopover and nesting site for many other birds, making it one of the region’s most valuable coastal habitats. While the beach is a beloved destination for recreation, off-leash dogs can unintentionally disturb nesting birds and other wildlife. Through outreach and community engagement, the BARK Rangers program helps visitors understand how simple actions can help protect sensitive species while keeping the beach welcoming for everyone.
